    Chapter 53 - The Star - 62 verses

    سُورَةُ النَّجۡمِ

    About An-Najm

    Verse 1
    وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wannajmi izaa hawaa

    Translation

    By the star when it descends,
    Verse 2
    مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Maa dalla saahibukum wa maa ghawaa

    Translation

    Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
    Verse 3
    وَمَا یَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maa yyantiqu 'anilhawaaa

    Translation

    Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
    Verse 4
    إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡیࣱ یُوحَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    In huwa illaa Wahyuny yoohaa

    Translation

    It is not but a revelation revealed,
    Verse 5
    عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    'Allamahoo shadeedul quwaa

    Translation

    Taught to him by one intense in strength -
    Verse 6
    ذُو مِرَّةࣲ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Zoo mirratin fastawaa

    Translation

    One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
    Verse 7
    وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa huwa bil ufuqil a'laa

    Translation

    While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.
    Verse 8
    ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Summa danaa fatadalla

    Translation

    Then he approached and descended
    Verse 9
    فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَیۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Fakaana qaaba qawsaini aw adnaa

    Translation

    And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
    Verse 10
    فَأَوۡحَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَاۤ أَوۡحَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Fa awhaaa ilaa 'abdihee maaa awhaa

    Translation

    And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.
    Verse 11
    مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Maa kazabal fu'aadu maa ra aa

    Translation

    The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.
    Verse 12
    أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا یَرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Afatumaaroonahoo 'alaa maayaraa

    Translation

    So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
    Verse 13
    وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa laqad ra aahu nazlatan ukhraa

    Translation

    And he certainly saw him in another descent
    Verse 14
    عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    'Inda sidratil muntaha

    Translation

    At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
    Verse 15
    عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    'Indahaa jannatul maawaa

    Translation

    Near it is the Garden of Refuge -
    Verse 16
    إِذۡ یَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا یَغۡشَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Iz yaghshas sidrata maa yaghshaa

    Translation

    When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].
    Verse 17
    مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Maa zaaghal basaru wa maa taghaa

    Translation

    The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
    Verse 18
    لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Laqad ra aa min aayaati Rabbihil kubraaa

    Translation

    He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
    Verse 19
    أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Afara'aytumul laata wal 'uzzaa

    Translation

    So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?
    Verse 20
    وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa manaatas saalisatal ukhraa

    Translation

    And Manat, the third - the other one?
    Verse 21
    أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    A-lakumuz zakaru wa lahul unsaa

    Translation

    Is the male for you and for Him the female?
    Verse 22
    تِلۡكَ إِذࣰا قِسۡمَةࣱ ضِیزَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Tilka izan qismatun deezaa

    Translation

    That, then, is an unjust division.
    Verse 23
    إِنۡ هِیَ إِلَّاۤ أَسۡمَاۤءࣱ سَمَّیۡتُمُوهَاۤ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَاۤؤُكُم مَّاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَـٰنٍۚ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    In hiya illaaa asmaaa'un sammaitumoohaaa antum wa aabaaa'ukum maaa anzalal laahu bihaa min sultaan; inyyattabi'oona illaz zanna wa maa tahwal anfusu wa laqad jaaa'ahum mir Rabbihimul hudaa

    Translation

    They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
    Verse 24
    أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Am lil insaani maa taman naa

    Translation

    Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
    Verse 25
    فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Falillaahil aakhiratu wal oolaa

    Translation

    Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
    Verse 26
    ۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكࣲ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰ⁠تِ لَا تُغۡنِی شَفَـٰعَتُهُمۡ شَیۡـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن یَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَرۡضَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa kam mim malakin fissamaawaati laa tughnee shafaa'atuhum shai'an illaa mim ba'di anyyaazanal laahu limany yashaaa'u wa yardaa

    Translation

    And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
    Verse 27
    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡـَٔاخِرَةِ لَیُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ تَسۡمِیَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    innal lazeena laa yu'minoona bil aakhirati la yusammoonal malaaa'ikata tasmiyatal unsaa

    Translation

    Indeed, people who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,
    Verse 28
    وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن یَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا یُغۡنِی مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَیۡـࣰٔا

    Pronunciation

    Wa maa lahum bihee min 'ilmin iny yattabi'oona illaz zanna wa innaz zanna laa yughnee minal haqqi shai'aa

    Translation

    And they have of it no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.
    Verse 29
    فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ یُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا

    Pronunciation

    Fa a'rid 'am man tawallaa 'an zikrinaa wa lam yurid illal hayaatad dunyaa

    Translation

    So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.
    Verse 30
    ذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Zalika mablaghuhum minal 'ilm; inna rabbaka huwa a'lamu biman dalla 'an sabee lihee wa huwa a'lamu bimanih tadaa

    Translation

    That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.
    Verse 31
    وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰ⁠تِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَسَـٰۤـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَحۡسَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى

    Pronunciation

    Wa lillaahi maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardi liyajziyal lazeena asaaa'oo bimaa 'amiloo wa yajziyal lazeena ahsanoo bilhusnaa

    Translation

    And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense people who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense people who do good with the best [reward] -
    Verse 32
    ٱلَّذِینَ یَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰۤىِٕرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَ ٰ⁠حِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَ ٰ⁠سِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةࣱ فِی بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Allazeena yajtaniboona kabaaa'iral ismi walfawaa hisha illal lamam; inna rabbaka waasi'ul maghfirah; huwa a'lamu bikum iz ansha akum minal ardi wa iz antum ajinnatun fee butooni umma haatikum falaa tuzakkooo anfusakum huwa a'lamu bimanit taqaa

    Translation

    people who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
    Verse 33
    أَفَرَءَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِی تَوَلَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Afara'ayatal lazee tawallaa

    Translation

    Have you seen the one who turned away
    Verse 34
    وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِیلࣰا وَأَكۡدَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa a'taa qaleelanw wa akdaa

    Translation

    And gave a little and [then] refrained?
    Verse 35
    أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبِ فَهُوَ یَرَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    A'indahoo 'ilmul ghaibi fahuwa yaraa

    Translation

    Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
    Verse 36
    أَمۡ لَمۡ یُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِی صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Am lam yunabbaa bimaa fee suhuhfi Moosa

    Translation

    Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
    Verse 37
    وَإِبۡرَ ٰ⁠هِیمَ ٱلَّذِی وَفَّىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa Ibraaheemal lazee waffaaa

    Translation

    And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
    Verse 38
    أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Allaa taziru waaziratunw wizra ukhraa

    Translation

    That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
    Verse 39
    وَأَن لَّیۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa al laisa lil insaani illaa maa sa'aa

    Translation

    And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
    Verse 40
    وَأَنَّ سَعۡیَهُۥ سَوۡفَ یُرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa anna sa'yahoo sawfa yuraa

    Translation

    And that his effort is going to be seen -
    Verse 41
    ثُمَّ یُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَاۤءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Summa yujzaahul jazaaa 'al awfaa

    Translation

    Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense
    Verse 42
    وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa anna ilaa rabbikal muntahaa

    Translation

    And that to your Lord is the finality
    Verse 43
    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahoo huwa adhaka wa abkaa

    Translation

    And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
    Verse 44
    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡیَا

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahoo huwa amaata wa ahyaa

    Translation

    And that it is He who causes death and gives life
    Verse 45
    وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَیۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahoo khalaqaz zawjainiz zakara wal unsaa

    Translation

    And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -
    Verse 46
    مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Min nutfatin izaa tumnaa

    Translation

    From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
    Verse 47
    وَأَنَّ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa anna 'alaihin nash atal ukhraa

    Translation

    And that [incumbent] upon Him is the next creation
    Verse 48
    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahoo huwa aghnaa wa aqnaa

    Translation

    And that it is He who enriches and suffices
    Verse 49
    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahoo huwa rabbush shi'raa

    Translation

    And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
    Verse 50
    وَأَنَّهُۥۤ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa annahooo ahlak a 'Aadanil oolaa

    Translation

    And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad
    Verse 51
    وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَاۤ أَبۡقَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa samooda famaaa abqaa

    Translation

    And Thamud - and He did not spare [them] -
    Verse 52
    وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa qawma Noohim min qablu innahum kaanoo hum azlama wa atghaa

    Translation

    And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
    Verse 53
    وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wal mu'tafikata ahwaa

    Translation

    And the overturned towns He hurled down
    Verse 54
    فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Faghashshaahaa maa ghashshaa

    Translation

    And covered them by that which He covered.
    Verse 55
    فَبِأَیِّ ءَالَاۤءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Fabi ayyi aalaaa'i Rabbika tatamaaraa

    Translation

    Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
    Verse 56
    هَـٰذَا نَذِیرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Haazaa nazeerum minan nuzuril oolaa

    Translation

    This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
    Verse 57
    أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡـَٔازِفَةُ

    Pronunciation

    Azifatil laazifah

    Translation

    The Approaching Day has approached.
    Verse 58
    لَیۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

    Pronunciation

    Laisa lahaa min doonil laahi kaashifah

    Translation

    Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover.
    Verse 59
    أَفَمِنۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Afamin hazal hadeesi ta'jaboon

    Translation

    Then at this statement do you wonder?
    Verse 60
    وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa tadhakoona wa laa tabkoon

    Translation

    And you laugh and do not weep
    Verse 61
    وَأَنتُمۡ سَـٰمِدُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa antum saamidoon

    Translation

    While you are proudly sporting?
    Verse 62
    فَٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ۩

    Pronunciation

    Fasjudoo lillaahi wa'budoo

    Translation

    So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him].
