    سُورَةُ القَلَمِ

    Verse 1
    نۤۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا یَسۡطُرُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Noon; walqalami wa maa yasturoon

    Translation

    Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,
    Verse 2
    مَاۤ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Maa anta bini'mati Rabbika bimajnoon

    Translation

    You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.
    Verse 3
    وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَیۡرَ مَمۡنُونࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Wa inna laka la ajran ghaira mamnoon

    Translation

    And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.
    Verse 4
    وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِیمࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Wa innaka la'alaa khuluqin 'azeem

    Translation

    And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
    Verse 5
    فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَیُبۡصِرُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fasatubsiru wa yubsiroon

    Translation

    So you will see and they will see
    Verse 6
    بِأَییِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ

    Pronunciation

    Bi ayyikumul maftoon

    Translation

    Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].
    Verse 7
    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِیلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Innaa Rabbaka Huwa a'lamu biman dalla 'an sabeelihee wa Huwa a'lamu bilmuhtadeen

    Translation

    Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
    Verse 8
    فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Falaa tuti'il mukazzibeen

    Translation

    Then do not obey the deniers.
    Verse 9
    وَدُّوا۟ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَیُدۡهِنُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Waddoo law tudhinu fa-yudhinoon

    Translation

    They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
    Verse 10
    وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافࣲ مَّهِینٍ

    Pronunciation

    Wa laa tuti' kulla hallaa fim maheen

    Translation

    And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
    Verse 11
    هَمَّازࣲ مَّشَّاۤءِۭ بِنَمِیمࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Hammaazim mash shaaa'im binameem

    Translation

    [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
    Verse 12
    مَّنَّاعࣲ لِّلۡخَیۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِیمٍ

    Pronunciation

    Mannaa'il lilkhairi mu'tadin aseem

    Translation

    A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,
    Verse 13
    عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ زَنِیمٍ

    Pronunciation

    'Utullim ba'da zaalika zaneem

    Translation

    Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.
    Verse 14
    أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالࣲ وَبَنِینَ

    Pronunciation

    An kaana zaa maalinw-wa baneen

    Translation

    Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,
    Verse 15
    إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Izaa tutlaa 'alaihi aayaatunaa qaala asaateerul awwaleen

    Translation

    When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
    Verse 16
    سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ

    Pronunciation

    Sanasimuhoo 'alal khurtoom

    Translation

    We will brand him upon the snout.
    Verse 17
    إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَـٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُوا۟ لَیَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Innaa balawnaahum kamaa balawnaaa As-haabal jannati iz 'aqsamoo la-yasri munnahaa musbiheen

    Translation

    Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning
    Verse 18
    وَلَا یَسۡتَثۡنُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa laa yastasnoon

    Translation

    Without making exception.
    Verse 19
    فَطَافَ عَلَیۡهَا طَاۤىِٕفࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَاۤىِٕمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fataafa 'alaihaa taaa'i fum mir rabbika wa hum naaa'imoon

    Translation

    So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
    Verse 20
    فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِیمِ

    Pronunciation

    Fa asbahat kassareem

    Translation

    And it became as though reaped.
    Verse 21
    فَتَنَادَوۡا۟ مُصۡبِحِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Fatanaadaw musbiheen

    Translation

    And they called one another at morning,
    Verse 22
    أَنِ ٱغۡدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرۡثِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰرِمِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Anighdoo 'alaa harsikum in kuntum saarimeen

    Translation

    [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."
    Verse 23
    فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمۡ یَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fantalaqoo wa hum yatakhaafatoon

    Translation

    So they set out, while lowering their voices,
    Verse 24
    أَن لَّا یَدۡخُلَنَّهَا ٱلۡیَوۡمَ عَلَیۡكُم مِّسۡكِینࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Al laa yadkhulannahal yawma 'alaikum miskeen

    Translation

    [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."
    Verse 25
    وَغَدَوۡا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرۡدࣲ قَـٰدِرِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa ghadaw 'alaa hardin qaadireen

    Translation

    And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.
    Verse 26
    فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهَا قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا لَضَاۤلُّونَ

    Pronunciation

    Falammaa ra awhaa qaalooo innaa ladaaalloon

    Translation

    But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;
    Verse 27
    بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Bal nahnu mahroomoon

    Translation

    Rather, we have been deprived."
    Verse 28
    قَالَ أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Qaala awsatuhum alam aqul lakum law laa tusabbihoon

    Translation

    The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' "
    Verse 29
    قَالُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَاۤ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Qaaloo subhaana rabbinaaa innaa kunnaa zaalimeen

    Translation

    They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
    Verse 30
    فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ یَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fa aqbala ba'duhum 'alaa ba'diny yatalaawamoon

    Translation

    Then they approached one another, blaming each other.
    Verse 31
    قَالُوا۟ یَـٰوَیۡلَنَاۤ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـٰغِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Qaaloo yaa wailanaaa innaa kunnaa taagheen

    Translation

    They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.
    Verse 32
    عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَاۤ أَن یُبۡدِلَنَا خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهَاۤ إِنَّاۤ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَ ٰ⁠غِبُونَ

    Pronunciation

    'Asaa rabbunaaa any yubdilanaa khairam minhaaa innaaa ilaa rabbinaa raaghiboon

    Translation

    Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."
    Verse 33
    كَذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ ٱلۡعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡـَٔاخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Kazaalikal azaab, wa la'azaabul aakhirati akbar; law kaanoo ya'lamoon

    Translation

    Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
    Verse 34
    إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ

    Pronunciation

    Inna lilmuttaqeena 'inda rabbihim jannaatin na'eem

    Translation

    Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.
    Verse 35
    أَفَنَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ كَٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Afanaj'alul muslimeena kalmujrimeen

    Translation

    Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?
    Verse 36
    مَا لَكُمۡ كَیۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Maa lakum kaifa tahhkumoon

    Translation

    What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
    Verse 37
    أَمۡ لَكُمۡ كِتَـٰبࣱ فِیهِ تَدۡرُسُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Am lakum kitaabun feehi tadrusoon

    Translation

    Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
    Verse 38
    إِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِیهِ لَمَا تَخَیَّرُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Inna lakum feehi lamaa takhaiyaroon

    Translation

    That indeed for you is whatever you choose?
    Verse 39
    أَمۡ لَكُمۡ أَیۡمَـٰنٌ عَلَیۡنَا بَـٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Am lakum aymaanun 'alainaa baalighatun ilaa yawmil qiyaamati inna lakum lamaa tahkumoon

    Translation

    Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
    Verse 40
    سَلۡهُمۡ أَیُّهُم بِذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ زَعِیمٌ

    Pronunciation

    Salhum ayyuhum bizaa lika za'eem

    Translation

    Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
    Verse 41
    أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَاۤءُ فَلۡیَأۡتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَـٰدِقِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Am lahum shurakaaa'u falyaatoo bishurakaaa 'ihim in kaanoo saadiqeen

    Translation

    Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.
    Verse 42
    یَوۡمَ یُكۡشَفُ عَن سَاقࣲ وَیُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Yawma yukshafu 'am saaqinw wa yud'awna ilas sujoodi falaa yastatee'oon

    Translation

    The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able,
    Verse 43
    خَـٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۖ وَقَدۡ كَانُوا۟ یُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمۡ سَـٰلِمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillatunw wa qad kaanoo yud'awna ilassujoodi wa hum saalimoon

    Translation

    Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.
    Verse 44
    فَذَرۡنِی وَمَن یُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِۖ سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَیۡثُ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fazarnee wa many yukazzibu bihaazal hadeesi sanastad rijuhum min haisu laa ya'lamoon

    Translation

    So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.
    Verse 45
    وَأُمۡلِی لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَیۡدِی مَتِینٌ

    Pronunciation

    Wa umlee lahum; inna kaidee mateen

    Translation

    And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.
    Verse 46
    أَمۡ تَسۡـَٔلُهُمۡ أَجۡرࣰا فَهُم مِّن مَّغۡرَمࣲ مُّثۡقَلُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Am tas'aluhum ajran fahum mim maghramim musqaloon

    Translation

    Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
    Verse 47
    أَمۡ عِندَهُمُ ٱلۡغَیۡبُ فَهُمۡ یَكۡتُبُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Am 'indahumul ghaibu fahum yaktuboon

    Translation

    Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?
    Verse 48
    فَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلۡحُوتِ إِذۡ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكۡظُومࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Fasbir lihkmi rabbika wa laa takun kasaahibil boot; iz naadaa wa huwa makzoom

    Translation

    Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed.
    Verse 49
    لَّوۡلَاۤ أَن تَدَ ٰ⁠رَكَهُۥ نِعۡمَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلۡعَرَاۤءِ وَهُوَ مَذۡمُومࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Law laaa an tadaara kahoo ni'matum mir rabbihee lanubiza bil'araaa'i wa huwa mazmoom

    Translation

    If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.
    Verse 50
    فَٱجۡتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Fajtabaahu rabbuhoo faja'alahoo minas saaliheen

    Translation

    And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
    Verse 51
    وَإِن یَكَادُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَیُزۡلِقُونَكَ بِأَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَیَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Wa iny-yakaadul lazeena kafaroo la-yuzliqoonaka biabsaarihim lammaa saml'uz-Zikra wa yaqooloona innahoo lamajnoon

    Translation

    And indeed, people who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."
    Verse 52
    وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرࣱ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maa huwa illaa zikrul lil'aalameen

    Translation

    But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
