    سُورَةُ المُدَّثِّرِ

    About Al-Muddaththir

    The Cloaked OneMeccan56 verses

    Verse 1
    یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ

    Pronunciation

    Yaaa ayyuhal muddassir

    Translation

    O you who covers himself [with a garment],
    Verse 2
    قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ

    Pronunciation

    Qum fa anzir

    Translation

    Arise and warn
    Verse 3
    وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ

    Pronunciation

    Wa rabbaka fakabbir

    Translation

    And your Lord glorify
    Verse 4
    وَثِیَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ

    Pronunciation

    Wa siyaabaka fatahhir

    Translation

    And your clothing purify
    Verse 5
    وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ

    Pronunciation

    Warrujza fahjur

    Translation

    And uncleanliness avoid
    Verse 6
    وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

    Pronunciation

    Wa laa tamnun tastaksir

    Translation

    And do not confer favor to acquire more
    Verse 7
    وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ

    Pronunciation

    Wa li Rabbika fasbir

    Translation

    But for your Lord be patient.
    Verse 8
    فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِی ٱلنَّاقُورِ

    Pronunciation

    Fa izaa nuqira fin naaqoor

    Translation

    And when the trumpet is blown,
    Verse 9
    فَذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَوۡمٌ عَسِیرٌ

    Pronunciation

    Fazaalika yawma 'iziny yawmun 'aseer

    Translation

    That Day will be a difficult day
    Verse 10
    عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیرࣲ

    Pronunciation

    'Alal kaafireena ghayru yaseer

    Translation

    For the disbelievers - not easy.
    Verse 11
    ذَرۡنِی وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیدࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Zamee wa man khalaqtu waheedaa

    Translation

    Leave Me with the one I created alone
    Verse 12
    وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰا مَّمۡدُودࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa ja'altu lahoo maalam mamdoodaa

    Translation

    And to whom I granted extensive wealth
    Verse 13
    وَبَنِینَ شُهُودࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa baneena shuhoodaa

    Translation

    And children present [with him]
    Verse 14
    وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِیدࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa mahhattu lahoo tamheeda

    Translation

    And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
    Verse 15
    ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِیدَ

    Pronunciation

    Summa yat ma'u an azeed

    Translation

    Then he desires that I should add more.
    Verse 16
    كَلَّاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔایَـٰتِنَا عَنِیدࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Kallaaa innahoo kaana li Aayaatinaa 'aneedaa

    Translation

    No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
    Verse 17
    سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

    Pronunciation

    Sa urhiquhoo sa'oodaa

    Translation

    I will cover him with arduous torment.
    Verse 18
    إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

    Pronunciation

    Innahoo fakkara wa qaddar

    Translation

    Indeed, he thought and deliberated.
    Verse 19
    فَقُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ

    Pronunciation

    Faqutila kayfa qaddar

    Translation

    So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
    Verse 20
    ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ

    Pronunciation

    Summa qutila kaifa qaddar

    Translation

    Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
    Verse 21
    ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Summa nazar

    Translation

    Then he considered [again];
    Verse 22
    ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Summa 'abasa wa basar

    Translation

    Then he frowned and scowled;
    Verse 23
    ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Summaa adbara wastakbar

    Translation

    Then he turned back and was arrogant
    Verse 24
    فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ یُؤۡثَرُ

    Pronunciation

    Faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu'sar

    Translation

    And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
    Verse 25
    إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ

    Pronunciation

    In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar

    Translation

    This is not but the word of a human being."
    Verse 26
    سَأُصۡلِیهِ سَقَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Sa usleehi saqar

    Translation

    I will drive him into Saqar.
    Verse 27
    وَمَاۤ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maaa adraaka maa saqar

    Translation

    And what can make you know what is Saqar?
    Verse 28
    لَا تُبۡقِی وَلَا تَذَرُ

    Pronunciation

    Laa tubqee wa laa tazar

    Translation

    It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
    Verse 29
    لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ

    Pronunciation

    Lawwaahatul lilbashar

    Translation

    Blackening the skins.
    Verse 30
    عَلَیۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ

    Pronunciation

    'Alaihaa tis'ata 'ashar

    Translation

    Over it are nineteen [angels].
    Verse 31
    وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَلَا یَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِیَقُولَ ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَاۤ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلࣰاۚ كَذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ یُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِیَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maaja''alnaaa As haaban naari illaa malaaa 'ikatanw wa maa ja'alnaa 'iddatahum illaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo liyastayqinal lazeena ootul kitaaba wa yazdaadal lazeena aamanooo eemaananw wa laa yartaabal lazeena ootul kitaaba walmu'minoona wa liyaqoolal lazeena fee quloo bihim maradunw walkaafiroona maazaaa araadal laahu bihaazaa masalaa; kazaalika yudillul laahu many yashaaa'u wa yahdee many yashaaa'; wa maa ya'lamu junooda rabbika illaa hoo; wa maa hiya illaa zikraa lil bashar

    Translation

    And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for people who disbelieve - that people who were given the Scripture will be convinced and people who have believed will increase in faith and people who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.
    Verse 32
    كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ

    Pronunciation

    Kallaa walqamar

    Translation

    No! By the moon
    Verse 33
    وَٱلَّیۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Wallaili adbar

    Translation

    And [by] the night when it departs
    Verse 34
    وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَاۤ أَسۡفَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Wassub hi izaaa asfar

    Translation

    And [by] the morning when it brightens,
    Verse 35
    إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ

    Pronunciation

    Innahaa la ihdal kubar

    Translation

    Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]
    Verse 36
    نَذِیرࣰا لِّلۡبَشَرِ

    Pronunciation

    Nazeeral lilbashar

    Translation

    As a warning to humanity -
    Verse 37
    لِمَن شَاۤءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن یَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ یَتَأَخَّرَ

    Pronunciation

    Liman shaaa'a minkum any yataqaddama aw yata akhkhar

    Translation

    To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.
    Verse 38
    كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِینَةٌ

    Pronunciation

    Kullu nafsim bim kasabat raheenah

    Translation

    Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
    Verse 39
    إِلَّاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ

    Pronunciation

    Illaaa as haabal yameen

    Translation

    Except the companions of the right,
    Verse 40
    فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ

    Pronunciation

    Fee jannaatiny yata saaa'aloon

    Translation

    [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
    Verse 41
    عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ

    Pronunciation

    'Anil mujrimeen

    Translation

    About the criminals,
    Verse 42
    مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِی سَقَرَ

    Pronunciation

    Maa salakakum fee saqar

    Translation

    [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
    Verse 43
    قَالُوا۟ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّینَ

    Pronunciation

    Qaaloo lam naku minal musalleen

    Translation

    They will say, "We were not of people who prayed,
    Verse 44
    وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa lam naku nut'imul miskeen

    Translation

    Nor did we used to feed the poor.
    Verse 45
    وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَاۤىِٕضِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Wa kunnaa nakhoodu ma'al khaaa'ideen

    Translation

    And we used to enter into vain discourse with people who engaged [in it],
    Verse 46
    وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ

    Pronunciation

    Wa kunnaa nukazzibu bi yawmid Deen

    Translation

    And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
    Verse 47
    حَتَّىٰۤ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡیَقِینُ

    Pronunciation

    Hattaaa ataanal yaqeen

    Translation

    Until there came to us the certainty."
    Verse 48
    فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Famaa tanfa'uhum shafaa'atush shaafi'een

    Translation

    So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
    Verse 49
    فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ

    Pronunciation

    Famaa lahum 'anittazkirati mu'rideen

    Translation

    Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
    Verse 50
    كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah

    Translation

    As if they were alarmed donkeys
    Verse 51
    فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ

    Pronunciation

    Farrat min qaswarah

    Translation

    Fleeing from a lion?
    Verse 52
    بَلۡ یُرِیدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِئࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن یُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ

    Pronunciation

    Bal yureedu kullum ri'im minhum any yu'taa suhufam munashsharah

    Translation

    Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.
    Verse 53
    كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡـَٔاخِرَةَ

    Pronunciation

    Kallaa bal laa yakhaafoonal aakhirah

    Translation

    No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.
    Verse 54
    كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Kallaaa innahoo tazkirah

    Translation

    No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder
    Verse 55
    فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Fa man shaaa'a zakarah

    Translation

    Then whoever wills will remember it.
    Verse 56
    وَمَا یَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maa yazkuroona illaaa any yashaaa'al laah; Huwa ahlut taqwaa wa ahlul maghfirah

    Translation

    And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
