    Chapter 80 - He frowned - 42 verses

    سُورَةُ عَبَسَ

    About Abasa

    Verse 1
    عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    'Abasa wa tawallaa.

    Translation

    The Prophet frowned and turned away
    Verse 2
    أَن جَاۤءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    An jaa-ahul 'a-maa

    Translation

    Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
    Verse 3
    وَمَا یُدۡرِیكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ یَزَّكَّىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Wa maa yudreeka la'allahu yaz zakkaa.

    Translation

    But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
    Verse 4
    أَوۡ یَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰۤ

    Pronunciation

    Au yaz zak karu fatanfa 'ahuz zikraa.

    Translation

    Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
    Verse 5
    أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Amma manis taghnaa

    Translation

    As for he who thinks himself without need,
    Verse 6
    فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Fa-anta lahu tasaddaa

    Translation

    To him you give attention.
    Verse 7
    وَمَا عَلَیۡكَ أَلَّا یَزَّكَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa ma 'alaika allaa yaz zakka.

    Translation

    And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
    Verse 8
    وَأَمَّا مَن جَاۤءَكَ یَسۡعَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wa amma man jaa-aka yas'a

    Translation

    But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
    Verse 9
    وَهُوَ یَخۡشَىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Wahuwa yakhshaa,

    Translation

    While he fears [Allah],
    Verse 10
    فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

    Pronunciation

    Fa-anta 'anhu talah haa.

    Translation

    From him you are distracted.
    Verse 11
    كَلَّاۤ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Kalla innaha tazkirah

    Translation

    No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
    Verse 12
    فَمَن شَاۤءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Faman shaa a zakarah

    Translation

    So whoever wills may remember it.
    Verse 13
    فِی صُحُفࣲ مُّكَرَّمَةࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Fi suhufim mukar rama,

    Translation

    [It is recorded] in honored sheets,
    Verse 14
    مَّرۡفُوعَةࣲ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ

    Pronunciation

    Marfoo'atim mutah hara,

    Translation

    Exalted and purified,
    Verse 15
    بِأَیۡدِی سَفَرَةࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Bi'aidee safara

    Translation

    [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
    Verse 16
    كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةࣲ

    Pronunciation

    Kiraamim bararah.

    Translation

    Noble and dutiful.
    Verse 17
    قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ مَاۤ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Qutilal-insanu maa akfarah.

    Translation

    Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
    Verse 18
    مِنۡ أَیِّ شَیۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Min aiyyi shai-in Khalaq

    Translation

    From what substance did He create him?
    Verse 19
    مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Min nutfah; khalaqahu faqad-darah.

    Translation

    From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
    Verse 20
    ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِیلَ یَسَّرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Thummas sabeela yas-sarah

    Translation

    Then He eased the way for him;
    Verse 21
    ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Thumma amatahu fa-aqbarah

    Translation

    Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
    Verse 22
    ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاۤءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Thumma iza shaa-a ansharah

    Translation

    Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
    Verse 23
    كَلَّا لَمَّا یَقۡضِ مَاۤ أَمَرَهُۥ

    Pronunciation

    Kalla lamma yaqdi maa amarah.

    Translation

    No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
    Verse 24
    فَلۡیَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦۤ

    Pronunciation

    Falyanzuril insanu ilaa ta-amih

    Translation

    Then let mankind look at his food -
    Verse 25
    أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَاۤءَ صَبࣰّا

    Pronunciation

    Anna sabab nalmaa-a sabba.

    Translation

    How We poured down water in torrents,
    Verse 26
    ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقࣰّا

    Pronunciation

    Thumma sha qaqnal-arda shaqqa.

    Translation

    Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
    Verse 27
    فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا حَبࣰّا

    Pronunciation

    Fa ambatna feeha habba

    Translation

    And caused to grow within it grain
    Verse 28
    وَعِنَبࣰا وَقَضۡبࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa 'inabaw-wa qadba

    Translation

    And grapes and herbage
    Verse 29
    وَزَیۡتُونࣰا وَنَخۡلࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa zaitoonaw wanakh la'

    Translation

    And olive and palm trees
    Verse 30
    وَحَدَاۤىِٕقَ غُلۡبࣰا

    Pronunciation

    Wa hadaa-iqa ghulba

    Translation

    And gardens of dense shrubbery
    Verse 31
    وَفَـٰكِهَةࣰ وَأَبࣰّا

    Pronunciation

    Wa faki hataw-wa abba.

    Translation

    And fruit and grass -
    Verse 32
    مَّتَـٰعࣰا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَـٰمِكُمۡ

    Pronunciation

    Mata'al-lakum wa li-an'amikum.

    Translation

    [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
    Verse 33
    فَإِذَا جَاۤءَتِ ٱلصَّاۤخَّةُ

    Pronunciation

    Faiza jaa-atis saakhah.

    Translation

    But when there comes the Deafening Blast
    Verse 34
    یَوۡمَ یَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِیهِ

    Pronunciation

    Yauma yafir-rul mar-u min akheeh

    Translation

    On the Day a man will flee from his brother
    Verse 35
    وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِیهِ

    Pronunciation

    Wa ummihee wa abeeh

    Translation

    And his mother and his father
    Verse 36
    وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِیهِ

    Pronunciation

    Wa sahi batihee wa baneeh.

    Translation

    And his wife and his children,
    Verse 37
    لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِئࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ شَأۡنࣱ یُغۡنِیهِ

    Pronunciation

    Likul limri-im-minuhm yaumaa-izin shaa nuy-yughneeh

    Translation

    For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
    Verse 38
    وُجُوهࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ مُّسۡفِرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Wujoo huny-yauma-izim-musfira;

    Translation

    [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
    Verse 39
    ضَاحِكَةࣱ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Dahi katum mustab shirah

    Translation

    Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
    Verse 40
    وَوُجُوهࣱ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ عَلَیۡهَا غَبَرَةࣱ

    Pronunciation

    Wa wujoohuy yauma-izin 'alaiha ghabar a

    Translation

    And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
    Verse 41
    تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

    Pronunciation

    Tarhaquha qatarah.

    Translation

    Blackness will cover them.
    Verse 42
    أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ

    Pronunciation

    Ulaa-ika humul-kafa ratul-fajarah.

    Translation

    Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
